A message
from Dr. Melanie Grossman
One
of my patients bought a unique
Valentine's Day gift for her husband
... a series of laser hair removal
treatments. He's never had a
cosmetic procedure before - but
always complains about the generous
amount of hair on his back.
In fact, laser hair removal is among
the most popular procedures for men
-- and women -- in my practice. Best
suited for patients with dark hair, the laser
"seeks out"
the melanin of hair follicles and
interrupts their growth cycle. The
pulses feel like a rubber band snap.
After 5 to 7 monthly sessions,
patients notice a dramatic reduction
in hair growth. Hairs that do grow
back are finer and softer.
Lasers can also help
pseudofolliculitis barbae, a
condition known as "razor bumps" --
ingrown facial hairs in the jawline
and beard (for men) or bikini area
(for women) that are extremely
uncomfortable and irritating.
Because the process takes several
months, now is the perfect time to
start treatments and prepare for a
smooth summer. For men, the most
common areas for laser hair removal
are shoulders, neck, back and ears.
For women, legs, axillae
(underarms), bikini, upper lips,
tummy and arms.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day,
consider sharing your love of
cosmetic dermatology and invite your
significant other, close friend or
family member to call for a
consultation. Or, give a gift that
fulfills something they've always
wanted to do ... whether it's laser
hair removal or laser skin toning.
Then splurge on a box of chocolates
too!
